The 180 Degree Rule

The 180 degree rule is a basic rule of cinema that a shot between two people must remain consistently in a 180 degree area (hence the name) so that the audience doesn't get confused by shifting angles. If you need to move out of the 180 degree area you need to create a establishing shot to show the new position of the camera to avoid any confusion of the audience and to show consistency between each shot.
